The Diocese of Ossory is finalising preparations for the installation of Bishop Ger Nash as the Bishop of Ossory. For some weeks now, since the announcement on 29th July that Pope Leo had appointed Bishop Ger as the next Bishop of Ossory, many in the Diocese have been working hard to prepare for the celebrations which will take place here in the Cathedral parish on 13th September.
Prayers will be said in all churches throughout the Diocese in the coming weeks and prayer cards will be distributed at Masses in these days so that the people of the Diocese can accompany Bishop Ger in his preparations. Resource packs will be prepared for both primary and secondary schools to help the students when they return to be part of the preparations and to take this opportunity to teach them about their local church, the role of a Bishop and our own roles as Baptised members of the faith!
Three evenings of prayer will help all in our Diocese prepare too – On Friday, 21st August 2026 we will gather for prayer here in St Mary’s Cathedral, On Friday, 28th August 2026 we will come together in the Church of the Assumption, Owning, Templeorum parish, the oldest Church in the Diocese of Ossory (1798) and on Friday, 4th September 2026 we will come together in St Kieran’s Church, Seir Kieran parish. Local choirs will accompany these moments of prayer.
On Sunday 13th September at 3pm nearly 1000 people will gather here in St Mary’s Cathedral for the Installation ceremony. The Principal celebrant will be Archbishop Dermot Farrell of Dublin he will be joined by many other bishops, the priests, people and religious of Ossory, those of Ferns and Killaloe, Bishop Ger’s home Diocese.
The ceremony will be live streamed on the St Mary’s Cathedral website – www.stmaryscathedral.ie We hold Bishop Ger in our prayers.
